CHAPTER 7

It’s Sunday service again and it’s our familye’s turn to host the gathering. It’s been so long since our yard has been crowded and honestly, this event cheers up my father’s mood somehow. Surprisingly, Mr. Jacob and Reuben showed up and it’s great to see Daed and Reuben’s vadder reconcile. They are talking and laughing together, bringing every one of us in the great relief after two long weeks of distance and coldness towards each other’s families.

“Mary,” Reuben greeted me after the preaching. “How are you?” he said, with a trace of concern in his eyes. Perhaps, he knows something about Vincent and me.

“I’m fine,” I answered casually. “How about you?” I asked back thoughtfully. It’s been a while since I last saw him. After the incident at their house, he came into our yard.

“I’m good,” he answered. “Have you heard about Vincent’s final exhibit? I’ve got tickets, would you like to come?” he asked curiously.

As an answer to his invitation, I shake my head sadly, wondering if he knows something about us.

“I told him you wouldn’t come,” he sighed. “But he still insisted that I ask you,” he added.

I stare at my friend curiously, waiting for him to ask me anything about my relationship with John Miller’s son. But I don’t think, he knows anything further, except my father and Mr. John are not on good terms.

“Lydia told me about your father’s order about befriending the Miller familye. Obviously, you will not dare to get any closer to them again after that,” he commented, unaware of the fact I have crossed my father’s rule these past few days.

“Do you know why he hates them so much?” I asked him, hoping he is the one who can provide me with an answer about the issue.

“No, my father doesn’t want me to talk about it either,” he answered regretfully.

Sighing, I get up from the bench. “They are very complicated people, aren’t they? I guess, we will grow old and just die without knowing the reason,” I commented impatiently.

“The Miller’s will leave next week anyway, so it’s better not to put a great deal with it,” he replied, shrugging his shoulders.

“Right,” I agreed, hiding the familiar pain in my chest.

“Are you sure, you’re not coming?” Reuben asked again, so I nod firmly, I’ve completely made up my mind. He sighed deeply. “Well, my father and I will go,” he informed me, putting the ticket in my hand. “Just in case you change your mind,” he added as I threw him a questioning look.
